Bio & artist statement

Daria Lou Nakov is a lens-based mixed media artist with a background in architectural design and photography. In her works she doesn’t capture spaces but recreates her emotional and physical relation to them. The place of media both analog and digital are at the center of her practice, together and separately. Her abstract imagery gives the viewer freedom of interpretation and indirectly questions the need for realistic representations. Her image creation combines various analog and digital techniquess to create new forms of image making, the analog is the physical and the digital the imagined. Through this, she imagines how to represent and recreate in the visual world, the spaces that surrounds us and find new means of image creation. By creating abstract images, she wants to take photography outside of the realistic world of representation and questions its place in our society of constant image consumption.

She graduated with a BA in Fine arts from the photography the Gerrit Rietveld Akademie Amsterdam in July 2021. Her practice consists of installations, books and print works. Since 2017 her work have been part of group shows and bookfairs, such has the UNCUT festival at the Stedelijk Museum (2018 & 2019), ‘Auspuf’ at Looiersgracht Amsterdam (2019). Most recently, at the Pinakotek der Modern in Munich as part of Der Greif magazine 15 year anniversary event (2023) and Byob Book fair Amsterdam (2023).

Building(s) Constellation(s) // in conversation with DLN

Daria Lou Nakov is a French lens-based mixed media artist. In her works she creates worlds within the images she composes and the installations she creates. With her latest work Building(s) Constellation(s) she creates an imaginary world. Instigated from the very tangible material of Berlin, concrete. Present in its streets and buildings concrete is the core material associated with the city. Through the repurposing and use of multiples media Daria L. Nakov takes you into her perception of the city.

« When I look at a space or building I can never capture what Is see, as it has so much to do with my perception of it and the trick that my imagination and mind play with it. »

It is through the use of multiples media, sculptures, collages both analog and digital that she reconstructs and share her vision. With this work she takes the viewer into a cosmic world.

Somewhere at the crossroads between city and stars. In contrast to the intangible nature of her vision, she purposely makes use of incredibly sturdy (concrete and resin) materials. With this she immortalizes her imaginary world and takes us into a dream. Like on a theater stage, the installation is a dialogue with materials and imagination, both within the artworks themselves and the installation. It is through the reconstruction of her vision that she takes the viewer into a cosmic world very real and also completely
